Amidst a climate of controversy and differences of opinion, drag brunches at Chacho's Restaurant in Morgan Hill continue to be held every month. The events, which usually include performances, standup comedy, and lip-syncing to entertaining music, have become quite popular among the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters. However, as reported by NBC Bay Area, these drag brunches have also attracted the attention of the city council.
In a city council meeting at the end of last week, Mayor Mark Turner raised a proposal to discuss shielding adult cabaret shows from public view, ensuring that children under the age of 18 would not be able to glimpse these events from public spaces. While he never directly mentioned Chacho's specifically, Councilman Rene Spring was quick to express his frustration with the proposal, as he believes the mayor was clearly referring to the drag brunches held at the restaurant.
Spring defended the events by stressing the importance of the performances as a significant part of queer culture, noting that no one is being forced to buy tickets to the shows. Chacho's drag brunches illustrate the vibrancy and inclusiveness of the Morgan Hill community, as evidenced by their Eventbrite page, which states that the event is intended for an open-minded, mature adult crowd and discourages the attendance of children.
Despite the disagreement, there is hope for the situation, as the recent controversy appears to be losing steam. The drag brunch performances are held on a fenced patio, and after meeting with the mayor, Chacho's owner clarified that they had been covering the outside with a tent to keep the performances out of public view and sell tickets. Satisfied with what he saw and heard, Mayor Turner has decided to drop the agenda item from the next city council meeting.
While the controversy surrounding the drag brunches held at Chacho's may dissipate for now, it highlights the importance of understanding and embracing the diversity that makes up the local community. Morgan Hill's ongoing conversations regarding these events serve as an example of how communities can share their perspectives and work together to resolve disputes.
