San Jose Clean Energy Unveils Peak Rewards Program to Amp Up Grid Reliability

In an era of growing concerns over energy resilience and environmental impact, San José Clean Energy (SJCE) has unveiled the Peak Rewards program to address grid reliability and manage electricity costs during the summer months, according to a recent announcement by the city. By incentivizing local businesses to reduce energy consumption during periods of high demand, the innovative demand response program aims to prevent blackouts, lower electricity costs, and ultimately improve air quality for residents in the Golden State's third-largest city.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan acknowledged the crucial role Peak Rewards will play in safeguarding power supply as the program anticipates peak energy usage now through October 2023. He noted that blackouts aren't just an inconvenience; the reliability of electricity access is a matter of life and death, and emphasized how the program "empowers local businesses to ease the strain on our electrical grid."

The new initiative is designed for businesses to join the efforts without any drawbacks. Unlike similar programs, there are no penalties for failing to reduce energy consumption. Instead, SJCE encourages participants by applying credits, proportional to the energy saved, directly to their electric bill after each event. Moreover, businesses can access assistance that helps them to identify the most effective strategies to maximize their savings.

Lori Mitchell, Director of the Community Energy Department, which operates SJCE, expressed gratitude to the commercial proponents of the Peak Rewards program for their role in balancing the grid during times of high demand or when power prices surge. In an official statement, she highlighted that the current era of clean energy is truly exciting as more people appreciate the tremendous value their actions can bring to the energy sector.

Besides helping to avoid blackouts during heat waves, demand response programs like Peak Rewards can yield significant benefits by easing electricity prices in wholesale markets. By curbing the usage of fossil fuels, particularly in the late afternoon when solar energy availability wanes, the program can foster a more sustainable and stable electricity rate environment for customers. Consequently, it can also contribute to improved air quality and the overall health of the community.

According to the announcement, Peak Rewards is the first stage of a four-phase demand response plan that SJCE will roll out over the next few years. The organization anticipates launching a program targeting residential customers in the summer of 2024, further broadening its ambit to promote energy savings and bolster grid reliability.
