At least 70 shots were fired outside a party hosted by Monica's Riverview restaurant. The tragic event has prompted discussions on local nightlife and safety, as what started as an afterhours R&B event led to a shocking loss of life.
The party, known as "RNB and Chill," took place at Monica's Riverview, a popular local restaurant and bar located at 1 Street. Attended by several hundred people, it was a night meant for relaxation and enjoyment. Instead, it ended in chaos and tragedy. According to CBS News, an Antioch man, 45, was killed, while two women sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
As recorded by witnesses and Contra Costa News, tensions began to rise between party-goers, leading to a physical altercation outside the venue. This quickly escalated into a disastrous turn of events, with over 70 gunshots fired during the confrontation. No arrests have been made, and Antioch police are actively working on potential suspect leads. Meanwhile, witnesses and community members are encouraged to come forward with any information.
In response to the tragic incident, Monica Barajas, the owner of Monica's Riverview, expressed her thoughts with deep sadness on Instagram, reaffirming her commitment to the local community. Reflecting on her restaurant's role, she stated, "I never opened this place thinking to myself, 'I'm going to make this a club.' The vibe at Monica's happened organically, and yes we expanded on it because people wanted it." Further emphasizing her dedication and love for her customers, Barajas vowed to continue serving the community with respect, while focusing on more family-friendly events in the future.
As the investigation continues, anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to contact the Antioch Police Department non-emergency line at 925-778-2441, or share anonymous tips by texting 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword "ANTIOCH."
