While the traffic came to a standstill due to the initial accident, a second incident took place around 3:30 a.m., further compounding the chaos on the freeway. This second crash, described as a massive ten-car pileup that ensued while drivers were halted, disrupted the flow of traffic just as the CHP was struggling to clear the area after the first fatal scene.
Witness accounts suggest that the vehicles involved in the pileup were hit hard, with some cars experiencing damage of varying degrees. In an interview with ABC7 News, one woman mentioned that her car was completely stopped when hit by a fast-moving vehicle, causing extensive damage. The harrowing scene has left motorists and authorities shaken, as they work tirelessly to untangle the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
With emergency crews and highway patrol teams working diligently to reopen the freeway, the cause of the initial fatal collision remains under investigation by the CHP. According to a CBS News report, it was noted that the southbound lanes near 66th Avenue were still closed at the time of the ten-car pileup.
Although details surrounding the initial tragedy remain sparse, the CHP has confirmed that a crumpled four-door sedan—the car where the driver died—was removed from the scene on a tow truck near the Coliseum.
