A terrible wrong-way crash near the San Ysidro Port of Entry earlier this week left one person dead and another seriously injured.
A 29-year-old San Diego man was driving a white car the wrong way on southbound Interstate 805 near East San Ysidro Boulevard when it collided with a blue van, killing the driver, according to NBC San Diego. The tragic incident occurred just before noon, and according to witnesses, the driver of the white car had been en route to enter Mexico through the San Ysidro Port of Entry but then made a U-turn and drove the wrong way in freeway lanes before crashing, per CBS8.
The van driver, whose identity has yet to be released, died at the scene, while the wrong-way driver, who was behind the wheel of a white Audi sedan, suffered major non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest as reported by San Diego Union-Tribune.
Authorities closed lanes on the freeway as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigated the crash, and a SigAlert was issued. First responders from Chula Vista and National City also assisted the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department during the incident.
Investigations into the cause of the crash and the sequence of events leading up to it are ongoing, as authorities seek to determine the factors that led the driver to make such a dangerous and ultimately fatal decision.
