The San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) was notified by the Nye County Sheriff's Office in Nevada about a disturbing video posted on Facebook, capturing a fatal stabbing incident in San Mateo, California. The person who reported the video was able to provide contact information for the individual responsible for the post, which led the police to the 200 block of 37th Ave, in a large apartment complex according to a SMPD report.
With no specific apartment number and considering the variable accuracy of the phone's location, SMPD officers conducted a thorough, door-to-door search of the apartment complex. After nearly three hours of methodical searching, they discovered a deceased victim in an apartment on the 200 block of 36th Ave, within the same complex. Though the suspect was not at the scene, officers had successfully identified him and located him within two hours of finding the victim.
Detectives were able to track down the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Mark Merchikoff, in San Jose, where he was arrested without incident. Merchikoff was said to have known the female victim, and the motive for the stabbing is still under investigation. The chilling fact remains that Merchikoff had filmed the final moments of the victim's life and then callously uploaded the video to Facebook before fleeing the area.
