Highway commuters and travelers planning to reach La Jolla from the northbound Interstate 5 need to brace for a three-night closure of the La Jolla Parkway exit starting from Sunday, July 30th, as Caltrans performs maintenance work to improve traveler safety. Workers will be busy replacing the guardrail with a new concrete barrier on the approach to the bridge and installing a "Smart Crash" cushion.
The construction work is slated to commence on Sunday and continue for the following two evenings from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., subject to weather conditions and the possibility of crashes. Caltrans has noted that showers are possible on Sunday and Monday, which may affect the work schedule. Travelers who need to access La Jolla during this period are advised to exit at La Jolla Village Drive before turning left onto La Jolla Scenic Drive and finally right onto La Jolla Parkway, as mentioned by Caltrans.
In addition to the new concrete barrier and the Smart Crash cushion, the construction project involves removing temporary barriers that had been put up during the earlier stages of the project and restriping the ramp. The closure aims to finalize the construction, resulting in safer, more reliable infrastructure.
As always, those traveling in the affected area should remain vigilant and alert to changing road conditions, the presence of construction workers, and moving equipment. For real-time traffic information, including speed, lane and road closures, and other essential updates, Caltrans advises motorists to use QuickMap or follow @SDCaltrans on Twitter.
Note that the stated timeline for the construction work remains subject to change, contingent on traffic incidents, weather conditions, and other considerations that may crop up throughout the project's duration.
