A 22-year-old man seeking assistance with his mental health crisis entered a Santee Walmart in San Diego County and staged a seven-hour standoff, threatening people with workout dumbbells, knives, and a hatchet yesterday. As reported by Fox 5 San Diego, the man entered the Walmart located in the 100 block of Town Center Parkway, and climbed on top of the shelving unit in the sporting goods department.
Store employees soon alerted the San Diego County Sheriff's Department after the man threatened to use the dumbbells as weapons and expressed a desire for deputies to shoot him, according to an official statement from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival at the scene, responding deputies from the Santee Sheriff's Station found the man in possession of two knives and a hatchet, as well as making threats to kill both the deputies and himself, which prompted the decision to evacuate and shut down the store for several hours for the safety of all involved.
Assisted by the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) and Crisis Negotiation’s Team (CNT), deputies engaged in de-escalation techniques and negotiations with the man, who repeatedly urged them to shoot him and approached them with the hatchet raised.Throughout the standoff, it became apparent that the man was experiencing a mental health crisis and was in desperate need of assistance, support, and understanding, according to ABC 10.
With a keen focus on the man's wellbeing and safety, and respectful of the potential for harm, the involved authorities managed to peacefully resolve the situation after seven long hours, with no injury occurring to any individuals as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. As Fox 5 San Diego mentions, the man, whose identity remains undisclosed, ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for a much-needed mental health evaluation, ensuring that he would receive the necessary support and care for his mental health issues.
