A brush fire, dubbed the "Border 20 Fire," broke out near the border yesterday, burning on both the U.S. and Mexico sides, however, it has now spread across an estimated 458 acres and is currently contained completely within Mexico, according to FOX 5 San Diego. Despite being confined to Mexico, the threat of the blaze crossing the border into the United States remains, prompting Cal Fire to deploy significant resources, including helicopter aid, to combat the fire and help prevent it from spreading further.
Initially, Cal Fire reported that the fire was burning on both sides of the border, but updated information revealed that the fire was completely in Mexico, with some aspects of the initial information being incorrect, as The San Diego Union-Tribune noted. Firefighters are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring readiness in case the blaze reaches the United States territory, with some crews stationed at Tecate Peak.
Cal Fire has been using airplanes and helicopters to drop fire retardant across areas on the U.S. side to prepare for the possibility of the fire moving north, although no injuries or threatened structures have been reported on the American side at this time, per The San Diego Union-Tribune. In the meantime, a smoke advisory has been issued for parts of San Diego County, including Dulzura and Potrero, due to poor air quality caused by the fire, as reported by NBC San Diego.
With the fire continuing to burn and pose a risk to the U.S., residents in areas affected by smoke are advised to limit physical and outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory or heart diseases, the elderly, and children, according to NBC San Diego.
