On Saturday, in the remote Carrizo Gorge area of the Jacumba Mountains, a mountain biker died while trying to save four hikers who were found suffering from dehydration. Fox 5 San Diego reported, that temperatures soared to 106 degrees when a call came in around 2:45 p.m. reporting at least 7 people in heat distress, and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
According to ABC 10 News, four resourceful mountain bikers happened to be in the area and offered their assistance in the search. Two of these riders stayed with the hikers, while the other two ventured out to brief the emergency crews on hikers' whereabouts and guide them to the location. In this rugged and inaccessible terrain, the quick thinking and determination of these bystanders proved vital in leading the rescue team to the distressed group.
After the hikers were safely removed from the trail with the help of a sheriff's helicopter, they were tended to by paramedics, but all refused to be transported to the hospital. Tragically, as the rescue operation concluded and the two mountain bikers who remained with the hikers began to ride down the trail, they got separated from each other. It was not long before one of them was found unconscious a quarter-mile past the trailhead.
Although emergency responders made it to the scene and carried the unconscious mountain biker out quickly, despite their best efforts, they could not revive the victim, who was pronounced dead after attempts to resuscitate them failed, according to Fox 5 San Diego. Details regarding the victim's identity, age, and gender remain undisclosed, and the exact cause of the death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

Cal Fire recommended that outdoor enthusiasts carry an adequate supply of water and food when embarking on hikes or rides, plan activities earlier in the day when temperatures are cooler, and always inform friends and family of their planned route and expected finishing time.
