The Oakland International Airport (OAK) could soon undergo a major modernization of its Terminals 1 and 2, as proposed plans were recently revealed by KRON4. This ambitious project, according to Colleen Liang, Acting Director of Environmental Programs and Planning, would involve the construction of a new 830,000-square-foot terminal building, connecting it to the existing terminals, and the addition of up to 16 new passenger gates to meet increasing travel demands. The project aims to bring the airport facilities up to aviation and industry standards, improving operations and safety for passengers.
As far back as the 1960s, thousands of passengers have flown through Oakland International Airport daily. However, the facility has since fallen behind the times, as Terminal 1 dates back to that period. The proposed modernization project seeks to create more space for passengers in response to the projected increase in travelers over the coming years. OAK expects more than 24 million passengers to fly through by 2038, as Liang shared with KRON4.
It's worth noting that the proposal does not include an additional runway, and the airport's footprint will remain within its existing bounds, Liang stated. Before the project can be approved and move forward, the Port of Oakland announced that the public will have the opportunity to comment on the development project proposal. This step ensures that all parties involved can have their say and voice any concerns before the project is greenlit.
The Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK, released a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on July 18, 2023, marking a critical milestone in the proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project. The Port has planned a series of public meetings during the extended 60-day review and comment period to gather feedback from the community, with meetings scheduled for August 15 and August 30.
Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland, Craig Simon, spoke to AJOT, highlighting the importance of the draft EIR release as it represents the Port's commitment to transparency, public service, and investment in Oakland International Airport as a valuable asset to the region.
Simon elaborated on the anticipation and excitement around the proposed modern changes to the airport's facilities, particularly emphasizing the importance of the community's interest, feedback, and engagement in the environmental process.
Given that the proposal receives the green light after the public participation process, Liang expressed her hope that the board would approve the project, thereby improving the airport's operations, safety, and efficiency, and accommodating the expected increase in passengers over the coming years.
Both the public and interested parties can review the full proposal on the Oakland airport's website, with the option to submit comments until September 15, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).
