The Oakland Police Department has announced their plans to hold a DUI checkpoint on July 25, 2023, from 7:00pm to 3:00am at an undisclosed location. This proactive move aims to improve road safety by identifying and arresting suspected impaired drivers, effectively reducing the risk for all road users.
A recent statement from A/Lt. Greg Bellusa reveals that “impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk.” According to the Oakland Police Department, the reason for selecting specific DUI checkpoint locations is based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, and the primary purpose of these checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing those drivers from the road. But that's not all; the department also emphasizes that not only alcohol could cause impairment.
The Oakland Police Department reminds us that legal substances like prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and even marijuana, though legal both medicinally and recreationally, can still be culprits of impaired driving. In fact, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, and the consequences for being caught are severe. First-time DUI offenders can expect to face penalties that add up to an average of $13,500, not to mention a suspended license.
This DUI checkpoint has been made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But despite the efforts of law enforcement, it's crucial for individuals to take personal responsibility for their actions while on the road, considering the irreversible consequences that can arise from driving under the influence.
