Thanh Ky restaurant in Oakland's Little Saigon neighborhood has recently been targeted twice by a group of wannabe burglars who have left little more than destruction in their heist hack. On July 17, KTVU's Henry Lee took to Twitter with the news of the two break-in attempts, while CBS News covered the second in greater depth, as the equally unsuccessful attempt in which the thieves made an astonishing effort to gain entry to the establishment.
These guys tried to break into Thanh Ky restaurant at E. 12th & 7th Ave. in Oakland’s Little Saigon twice a week apart. “Fortunately, there was no monetary loss, but there was major damage to the water pipes and walls,” owners’ son tells me. @oaklandpoliceca pic.twitter.com/gDDhK8Thlt

During the first known attempt on July 10, the clumsy criminals damaged the restaurant's door but failed to make their way inside. Their ambitions grew bolder on July 17 when they escalated to using crowbars and even a van to break through the security door. Despite their best efforts and an impressive array of tools, they still ultimately left empty-handed, though with significant damage to the storefront.
Video footage of the incident shows the would-be burglars attempting to pry open the security door with the crowbar, before crashing the van into the establishment. Still unable to gain entry, the thieves resorted to using a power tool and eventually the crowbar again, finally breaking off the security door but still thwarted by the second door.
The dramatic endeavor left Thanh Ky with major damage to its walls and water pipes, according to the owners' son in a conversation with Henry Lee of KTVU. The burglars even went as far as attaching a chain to the second door and using the van in an attempt to rip it from its frame - all to no avail.
The cherished restaurant, regularly praised for its noodles, has been dealing with the frustration and damage resulting from these repeated break-ins. Thankfully, no monetary loss has been reported. Nevertheless, the physical impacts on the business, its water pipes, and its walls are disheartening for those who have come to love this neighborhood staple.
