Beachgoers in La Jolla Cove were taken by surprise on when a group of sea lions seemed to charge and bark at them, creating panic and worry among those present and sparking viral videos shared by bystanders, posted to Instagram by @whoisjaphet. But those familiar with sea lion behavior and marine life experts tell a different story.
While the videos captured make for an exciting watch and give an impression of aggression from the sea lions, Robyn Davidoff, chair of the Sierra Club Seal Society, told Fox 5 San Diego that the apparent charging wasn't an act of aggression towards humans. Instead, the two male sea lions were likely chasing each other during mating season, trying to establish territory, both in the water and on land.
This particular incident happened when summer crowds filled the popular beach, and it isn't the first time sea lions have run through groups of people while displaying normal patterns of behavior. Last year, another similar event featuring sea lions during their mating season was shared on TikTok by @char1ianne. However, the fact remains that these marine mammals pose a risk to beach visitors when their paths cross.

Experts insist that while it may appear aggressive, these encounters are simply displays of normal sea lion behavior and not intentionally directed at humans. Davidoff explained, "They are wild animals, but they don't typically charge people just for the heck of it. There's usually another sea lion there. They don't really care about people." In most cases, the risk of injury occurs when people encroach on the sea lion's space or startle them by attempting to take selfies with them or touch them.
It is important to note that California sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Harassing or bothering them could result in fines or even imprisonment according to FOX 5. Despite this, enforcement of these laws proves difficult, as only agents from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) can cite people for infractions. Davidoff mentioned the need for a more significant enforcement presence but acknowledged it falls on the city, Parks and Recreation, and lifeguards to manage interactions in the meantime.
To minimize risks to both humans and sea lions, experts encourage visitors to follow the "share the shore" guidelines at beaches like La Jolla Cove. These guidelines include staying at least 10 to 15 feet away from sea lions and being aware of one's surroundings. It is also advised to avoid sudden movements and loud noises that might provoke these wild animals into biting or attacking.
Another incident from June 2023 was shared on CBS 8, involving a man petting a sea lion pup after completing a snorkeling session as per CBS 8. Japhet Perez, an executive board member of the La Jolla Village Merchants Association, commented on the need for visitors to respect sea lions and their space. He stated, "The sea lions and all marine life are essential to La Jolla Village. As caretakers, we should respect their space and environment and treat them as neighbors. We firmly believe we can coexist alongside them and share the same spaces in peace."
