In a significant move to reshape the future of its economic landscape, the City of Alameda appointed Abigail Thorne-Lyman as Director of the Base Reuse and Economic Development Department (BRED) on Wednesday. Thorne-Lyman comes with an impressive background, having more than 20 years of experience in real estate and economic development across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Her appointment emphasizes the city's dedication to creating an economically diverse and financially sustainable community by redeveloping the former Naval Air Station Alameda (Alameda Point).

Thorne-Lyman brings a wealth of expertise to the role, having most recently served as the Director of Real Estate and Property Development at BART, where she managed all aspects of BART's real estate portfolio and oversaw complex transit-oriented developments. Her experience in advancing politically and logistically intricate projects, make Thorne-Lyman an ideal fit for this challenging role according to City Manager Jennifer Ott.

Redeveloping Alameda Point, an 880-acre site, is an ambitious project that holds enormous potential for the city. With Thorne-Lyman's leadership, the BRED Department is expected to focus on transforming the former air station into a mixed-used, transit-oriented development that will not only contribute to the city's economic growth but also facilitate the expansion of parks and vital infrastructure. This, in turn, aims to support and enhance the quality of life for Alameda residents.

Abigail Thorne-Lyman's appointment comes as a result of an extensive search process, highlighting the city's commitment to finding the right individual for this pivotal role. In a statement, Thorne-Lyman expressed her excitement to join Alameda's executive team and her eagerness to advance the development of Alameda Point, as well as further the city's economic development strategy as she takes on the position on September 25.

The BRED Department comprises three distinct divisions: Base Reuse, Economic Development, and Asset Management. The Base Reuse division is chiefly responsible for implementing the City's plans to repurpose Alameda Point. The Economic Development division, on the other hand, is focused on maintaining and growing Alameda's tax and employment bases, ensuring the financial stability of the city. Finally, the Asset Management division manages the city's extensive portfolio of properties, both owned and leased.

As Thorne-Lyman takes on her new role, she has some big shoes to fill. The city extended its gratitude to Andrew Thomas, who has been serving as the Interim Base Reuse and Economic Development Director. Thomas will continue to support the BRED Department, ensuring a smooth transition and the Department's ongoing success.
