The families of 13 U.S. servicemembers who lost their lives during the Kabul airport attack in 2021 convened at Escondido City Hall yesterday, in search of answers and closure from the Biden Administration. According to a press release from Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-48), a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the congressman joined and helped organized the first-ever public Congressional forum for these Gold Star Families.
At the forum, family members shared their stories and demanded answers from the Biden Administration, which had seemingly turned a blind eye to their pain over the past two years, according to KTUL. The heartbroken parents of the fallen soldiers accused the administration of showing "zero accountability" for their children's deaths and pleaded for answers and clarity regarding the events that unfolded during the Kabul airport attack. Their stories served as a stark reminder of the realities of war and the aftershocks faced by the families left behind to grieve their losses.
Issa supported the Gold Star Families in their quest for truth and accountability, stating, "For almost two years, the Gold Star Families of the fallen in Afghanistan have waited for answers and accountability for the loss of their loved ones - and they have waited long enough." He sharply criticized the Biden Administration for shutting out and ignoring the families while attempting to move on from the debacle that transpired during the Afghanistan withdrawal.
The servicemembers killed in the attack were predominantly assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment and were based at Camp Pendleton. They included Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, Sgt. Nicole L. Gee, Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, Cpl. Hunter Lopez, Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, Cpl. Daegan W. Page, Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez, and Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, as well as Navy Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak and Army Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss, as reported by CBS 8.
Passionate voices from the families echoed throughout the forum, with the mother of Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez stating, "I want answers. I want the truth. I want to go to sleep knowing (why my son died)," according to KTUL. She questioned the actions of the current government and asked how many more parents would have to endure this nightmare before the administration is held accountable for its actions.
