On Monday evening, August 28th, an unforeseen tragedy disrupted the peace in the city of Newton, Massachusetts. A 57-year-old bicyclist was reportedly hit by a UPS truck. The incident took place around 5:24 p.m., at the bustling intersection of Watertown and Bridge streets, in Nonantum neighborhood according to WCVB.
The injured bicyclist was quickly transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries as reported by MassLive.
Early investigations conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, Newton Police, and Massachusetts State Police CARS suggest that the UPS truck was heading east on Watertown Street prior to making a left turn onto Bridge Street, inadvertently colliding with the bicyclist who was traveling west according to Boston 25 News. The 57-year-old UPS driver, also a resident of Newton, remained at the scene as law enforcement officials arrived to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller expressed deep sorrow at the incident in a statement: "This news is deeply upsetting. At this difficult time, I am thinking first and foremost of the family and friends of the cyclist. I know people all across Newton will hold them in their thoughts" as NBC Boston shared.
In the meantime, the investigation continues as the authorities piece together the details of the accident. Roads in the area were temporarily closed during the initial investigation, but have since reopened as MassLive reported.
