A distressing scene unfolded on Oakland's I-980 when a body was discovered near the site of a brush fire. According to KTVU, the California Highway Patrol and Oakland firefighters arrived on the scene near the 17th Street off-ramp just before 1:30 a.m. The man had been burned and suffered head trauma; authorities reported that he had apparently been "setting up a fire."
As the fire was extinguished, the investigation deepened with differing details emerging from various sources. A report from KRON4 stated that the Oakland Fire Department saw a man setting up the fire along the westbound lane of I-980, near the 17th Street off-ramp. The California Highway Patrol subsequently confirmed a fatality on the westbound lane near 14th Street after the burned victim with head trauma was found at the off-ramp.
However, the story took another turn as Mercury News reported that investigators could not confirm the cause of death or whether the body showed any signs of trauma caused by the fire or other factors. As a result of this incident, the eastbound 17th Street off-ramp was closed, and a Sig-alert was issued. The ramp eventually reopened around 6 a.m., but many questions remain unanswered.
