An arrest has been made in the Contra Costa freeway shooting case. Together, the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) Golden Gate Division (GGD) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) apprehended 24-year-old Damari Calvin of Vallejo on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, for his involvement in the violent incident as reported by CHP Golden Gate Division.
The arrest comes nearly a month after the initial freeway shooting incident on July 26th, wherein shots were fired on westbound SR-24 near Pleasant Hill Road. As officers from the CHP's Contra Costa Area office responded, witnesses called 9-1-1 to report two vehicles involved in a shooting near the Central Lafayette off-ramp. A collision ensued involving an uninvolved vehicle, and the occupants of both vehicles involved in the shooting fled the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the occupants of the uninvolved vehicle.
Following an intensive investigation, CHP detectives worked tirelessly to identify Calvin as a suspect in the shooting and obtain a warrant for his arrest. It was on Tuesday, August 22nd, that a joint operation took place involving a CHP SWAT team, canine teams, detectives, and members of the ACSO investigations unit. They executed the search and arrest warrant on Calvin and his residence in Vallejo, CA, ultimately leading to his arrest and detention.
According to the CHP Golden Gate Division, while at Calvin's residence, five other people were detained and later arrested in connection with a separate investigation into numerous robberies and stolen vehicles. Adding to the crimes, a search of the premises unveiled an assortment of illegal firearms, including two ghost gun assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, and a stolen vehicle.
The cooperative efforts of the CHP and ACSO resulted in charges being brought against Calvin, including attempted murder, discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, and assault with a firearm.
