In a span of just three days, Alameda's East Bay area has been plagued by not one but two separate sinkholes causing mayhem for local residents with water shutoffs, road closures, and traffic disruptions. The first sinkhole emerged on the 2900 block of Lincoln Avenue after a water main break, with repair crews working hastily to restore water service to affected customers on Versailles Avenue, High Street, and some side streets, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Simultaneously, another sinkhole crisis on its heels emerged on Otis Drive after yet another water main break, leaving 40 people without water, Alameda Post detailed. With eastbound traffic diverted to the westbound lane, and westbound traffic forced into the bike lane on the north side of the street, authorities advised drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to exercise caution in the area, especially as multiple workers and moving vehicles were present at the active construction site.

While the first sinkhole was more or less contained, the second sinkhole issue still posed an ongoing challenge for East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). The situation led to a series of AC alerts being issued to warn locals about traffic closures and water shutoff issues, as KTVU highlighted. Residents shared images of their flooded driveways and yards on Facebook while crews scrambled to fix the damage. Interestingly, the second sinkhole seemed larger than the first one, situated directly across from Arlington.

Although EBMUD anticipated that water service would be restored by Saturday, 2 p.m., they gave no clear estimates on when the sinkhole would be fully repaired, prolonging concerns for residents. Drivers and other commuters are advised to avoid Otis Drive between Grand Street and Westline Drive to minimize disruption. With two adjacent water main breaks and sinkholes in such a short timeframe, the situation remains troublesome for residents of the East Bay community as they navigate these unexpected obstacles.
