Oakland Hills, a suburban enclave in California, residents are on high alert after an unsettling series of home invasions targeting elderly Asian families, raising questions about a potential pattern as the number of cases continues to rise. There have been at least 50 home invasions that seemingly follow this alarming trend, leading to heightened concern among locals.
A small group of criminals has targeted approximately 50 homes in the Oakland Hills where Asian families live, mostly elderly couples, according to OPD internal advisory I've seen. I have met some of the victims and will have surveillance video at 6. pic.twitter.com/rSHREj0IBH

Law enforcement sources obtained by the I-Team reveal a possible connection between the home invasions, suggesting that a small group of criminals may be responsible for the majority of these brazen burglaries, as reported by ABC7 News. One harrowing account involving an 80-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife, along with their two grandchildren, paints a distressing picture of the danger these families are facing.
The elderly couple, in this case, became victims when robbers broke into their home through a second-floor window. According to the couple's daughter, the intruders held her parents at gunpoint while ransacking their home in search of valuables, ultimately making off with $10,000 in cash and jewelry. This family, much like others in the Oakland Hills community, have faced multiple attempted home invasions, resulting in increased security measures, including fences, cameras, and a guard dog. Unfortunately, these defenses have not deterred the persistent criminals from continuing their ruthless spree.
An internal advisory from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) shared by ABC's I-Team's Dan Noyes unveils that the OPD has tracked approximately 50 first-degree robberies targeting mostly elderly Asian couples in Oakland Hills. This information further fuels concerns about the potential connection between the crimes and emphasizes the urgent need for an apprehension of the individuals involved. The OPD, however, has not released any details regarding the investigation or shared any public advisories.
Another victim of these targeted home invasions, a cinematographer named Tony, had his front door pushed in during the early hours of the morning by one of the robbers armed with a knife. In this instance, Tony managed to barricade himself in a bedroom while his wife called 911. The criminals still managed to escape with $40,000 worth of camera gear, leaving Tony and his family shaken and terrified. When informed that these criminals were primarily targeting Asian families, Tony expressed his dismay and frustration at the added challenges faced by the community, given recent instances of Asian hate crimes in the area, as reported in another ABC7 News article.
Victims who have been multiply targeted remain fearful of retaliation and choose not to speak out publicly. However, they hope that sharing their stories will lead to someone recognizing these criminals and notifying the authorities, subsequently bringing an end to the terrifying home invasion spree plaguing the Oakland Hills community.
