A heartbreaking scene unfolded along the shores of Chebacco Lake in Hamilton, Massachusetts, as emergency crews discovered the lifeless body of a man reported missing from Wrentham. Identified as Mr. Steve Perry, a 73-year-old Wrentham resident and retired truck driver who failed to return home on Saturday, August 26, the man was found near the lake's boat ramp, with his vehicle submerged in the water, according to the Boston Globe.
The recovery efforts began on Wednesday morning, following a tip-off about a car in the lake as reported by WHDH News. The Hamilton Police Department, along with firefighters and dive teams, arrived on scene by 9 am and promptly started their investigation.
Shortly afterward, a sedan was towed out of the water with the help of a flatbed truck. The driver, found lifeless nearby, was identified as Mr. Perry.
Police from Wrentham indicated that they were able to get contact Mr. Perry via his cellphone, when authorities discovered that he had gotten lost after taking Rt. 495. Over the course of the evening, Mr. Perry communicated with the police several times, reporting from different locations - Providence, somewhere south of Harford Ct., Revere Beach, and lastly near Manchester-by-the-Sea.
As Mr. Perry was driving continuously during these discussions, his exact location remained uncertain. Unfortunately, communication was cut off late into the night as his cellphone ran out of battery, an event that was anticipated since Mr. Perry did not have a car charger. Since then, no further contact has been made.
Mr. Perry is characterized by his brown eyes and gray-white hair and was last seen wearing a tan work shirt with the words "CRST Specialized Transit" embroidered above the pocket, dark blue trousers, and black work boots. He utilizes an aluminum cane for mobility and does not have any known cognitive disorders like Alzheimer's or dementia. His car was later discovered at a separate location, with Mr. Perry found deceased nearby.
While the recovery of the vehicle and the body occurred within hours of the initial report and search effort, the unanswered questions leave a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the town. The community is left grappling with the knowledge that this seemingly serene location harbored a dark secret – one in which a life was tragically lost.
As the local residents mourn their loss, the family and friends of the victim seek clarity and closure amid this bewildering turn of events.
