Downtown Boston faced an incident in which four individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in graffiti tagging. According to a Boston Police news release, at approximately 2:03 AM yesterday, officers of the Anti-Crime Unit in District A-1 apprehended Jared Moe, 18, and three juvenile males from Winchester, Massachusetts.

While patrolling near 1 Harrison Avenue, officers observed a group of individuals in a parking lot, one of whom attempted to hide from them. This suspicious activity led the officers to reverse their cruiser and subsequently witnessed the group running towards Boylston Street. The suspects were stopped in the area of 15 Essex Street, and upon further investigation, four cans of spray paint were discovered and seized.

Returning to the original location, officers found evidence of wet spray paint indicative of recent graffiti tagging. Jared Moe has been placed under arrest and charged with damage to property by graffiti/tagging. He is set to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court. The juveniles, two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old, were also arrested, facing charges of delinquency in relation to graffiti tagging; their cases will be handled in Boston Juvenile Court.

The city of Boston has long attempted to address the issue of graffiti and vandalism. In July 2022, a Boston Globe article reported the federal government taking a hardline stance against street art, causing widespread debate regarding the enforcement of such regulations. Graffiti has often been seen as a medium for expression, particularly within marginalized communities, but is consistently met with opposition, due to its perceived destructive, criminal nature.
