With striped suits, neon green, and a whole lot of the Netherworld, "Beetlejuice The Musical" has hit the stage at the San Diego Civic Theatre, as Broadway San Diego presents this ghostly yet often touching performance based on Tim Burton's classic 1988 American fantasy horror comedy film. With strong recommended ages of 10+, San Diego audiences are in for a treat with this macabre yet captivating musical now showing until August 20th.
The musical, like the film, tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a recently deceased couple and the infamous demon with a thing for stripes. With its uproarious humor, and beneath its bizarre surface, Beetlejuice The Musical digs six feet under to explore themes of family, love, and making the most of every single "Day-O!"
That's not to say that the musical is all heartwarming themes with no edge – as a Fox 5 San Diego report assures, the show "contains strong language, mature references, and a lot of the crazy, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon." Parental discretion is advised when bringing younger audience members, given the production's irreverent and often adult humor.
The show's run time is two hours and 35 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission. While masks and vaccinations are strongly recommended, they are not required at this time for guests attending Broadway San Diego events.
