In the early hours of Friday, August 25th, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Matthew McRae found himself in a perilous situation not while on duty, but on vacation in Utah. According to a statement released by MSP Colonel John E. Mawn Jr., Trooper McRae was a passenger in a ride-share vehicle when it was struck by a suspected drunk driver in Salt Lake City, leading to life-threatening injuries.
While McRae's family and a member of the Executive Board of the State Police Association of Massachusetts (SPAM) are by his side, support efforts are being spearheaded by the association alongside the MSP's Employee Assistance Unit.
As MSP Colonel Mawn Jr. stated, "It is never more apparent that we in the MSP are an extended family than it is in a time of crisis." He expressed gratitude towards SPAM and their president, Pat McNamara, for the unwavering aid provided to Trooper McRae and his family.
Colonel Mawn's acknowledgment of the vital support given by the Employee Assistance Unit and the assistance on location by the Salt Lake City Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, local firefighters, paramedics, and hospital staff solidifies the collaborative nature of the first responder's community.
