In response to the devastating wildfires that swept through the town of Lahaina in Maui, claiming at least 96 lives and destroying hundreds of homes, the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) is stepping up to help the animal victims of this tragedy. Earlier today, at the request of the Maui Humane Society, SDHS sent their Emergency Response Team to assist with search and rescue efforts, animal care, sheltering of large and companion animals, and transports in the affected area according to FOX 5 San Diego.
The team of four experts is expected to be on the ground in the ravaged Lahaina area for 8 to 10 days, working tirelessly to address animal-related issues arising from the fire, per an NBC San Diego report.
Since the catastrophe became apparent on Wednesday, approximately 46,000 residents and visitors have evacuated the area via Kahului Airport in West Maui, but sadly, some animals were left behind as CBS 8 San Diego reported. The San Diego Humane Society's Emergency Response Team aims to rescue these vulnerable creatures while providing support and services to the local community in their time of need.
Besides claiming lives and displacing thousands, the wildfire has also left a wake of destruction in its path, burning down nearly 300 homes and other structures, many of which were considered local landmarks according to NBC San Diego.
In light of these tragic events, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Thursday that the state would deploy resources and urban search and rescue teams to assist with disaster response efforts on the island per NBC San Diego. The governor expressed California's support and solidarity with the people of Maui and all Hawaiians as they grapple with the disastrous consequences of the fires.
While the Emergency Response Team focuses on aiding the animal victims, numerous organizations have rallied around the human survivors of the wildfires. FOX 5's sister station KHON2 has partnered with the American Red Cross and parent company Nexstar to set up a dedicated Maui wildfire donation page, enabling individuals to contribute directly to relief efforts for those impacted by the tragedy.
For those who feel compelled to support the animal rescue and recovery efforts, the Maui Humane Society has provided the opportunity to make donations directly via their website, ensuring that such contributions directly benefit the animals affected by the wildfires.
