A heart-wrenching incident occurred on Sunday, when a San Diego State University (SDSU) student reported being sexually assaulted by a driver they believed to be working for a rideshare service. The victim/survivor entered the vehicle, assuming it to be a legitimate rideshare, only to be deceived and sexually assaulted by the driver before being dropped off at an off-campus location, the area of 70th Street and Saranac Street in the City of San Diego. The report of this heinous crime has shaken the SDSU student community, raising questions about the safety of using rideshare services.
Details of the suspect in this case are limited, according to CBS 8. However, SDSU authorities have alerted their students about the reported sexual assault, emphasizing the significance of ensuring personal safety while using ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.
In light of this event, it is essential to quickly review the safety tips offered by ridesharing companies. Uber suggests sitting in the backseat while traveling alone, sharing trip details with loved ones by tapping "share trip status" in the app, and confirming the passenger's name before entering the vehicle. As freshman Lyla Logan diligently practices, always check the license plate and confirm the information on your phone before boarding a rideshare vehicle.
The San Diego Police Department has now taken charge of the sexual assault investigation. They ask anyone with information regarding the case to report it by calling 619-531-2210 and referencing case #23037066.
