Wanted felon, Rahul Kumar, was arrested after an armed standoff that saw the deployment of SWAT teams and specialized equipment, according to Vallejo Police.
The incident began on Saturday, around noon when Vallejo Police Department officers responded to reports of a man walking in the neighborhood and brandishing what appeared to be an assault rifle at residents in the 100 block of Ladera Drive, as per the Vallejo Police Department's official Facebook page. The suspect, identified as Rahul Kumar, was already wanted for violating multiple felonies and had a warrant out for his arrest. Kumar refused to exit the residence when officers arrived, which led to the activation of the Vallejo Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU), composed of SWAT teams, Crisis Negotiation teams, and Tech teams.
Despite establishing communication with Kumar, he refused to surrender, prompting the SWAT officers to deploy specialized equipment and non-lethal tactics to facilitate the suspect's safe surrender, KRON4 reported. They utilized less-lethal chemical agents, which resulted in Kumar fleeing from the back entrance of the residence, only to be apprehended by officers before he could escape.
The Vallejo Police Department Detective Division also assisted in the investigation, and after speaking with victims and witnesses, Kumar was arrested on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, terroristic threats, cruelty to an animal, grand theft, and brandishing a firearm, as noted by the Vallejo Police Department. He was subsequently booked into the Solano County Jail.
Jail records showed that Kumar, 22, remained in custody as of today and was scheduled to appear in court tomorrow afternoon, CBS News San Francisco mentioned. The Vallejo Police Department thanked members of the community for their support and assistance during the incident, emphasizing the role they played in helping the officers to bring the matter to a safe resolution.
Officer Manuel Gonzalez of the Vallejo Police Department is urging anyone with additional information regarding the case to get in touch via email or by phone at 707-656-1675, as reported in the same CBS News San Francisco article.
