Del Mar Racetrack in California is set to host the Taste of New Orleans Food & Music Festival on Saturday, August 5, promising an exciting blend of Southern cuisine, regional craft beers, and live music via the event's website.

The Taste of New Orleans festival aims to immerse attendees in the flavors and sounds of the South as they sample authentic Cajun cuisine like gumbo, po'boys, beignets, jambalaya, and red beans & rice from participating vendors such as 5C's Creole. Additionally, guests can enjoy live Cajun music from local bands Theo & the Zydeco Patrol and the Bayou Brothers, making it a vibrant celebration of New Orleans culture.

However, the excitement surrounding the festival is somewhat tempered by recent incidents involving racehorses at the venue, raising questions about the balance between entertainment and safety concerns. Two racehorses tragically died within just two days in late July 2023, while another incident saw a jockey hospitalized and a horse recovering after a dangerous fall during the racetrack's opening weekend as we reported here on Hoodline last week. These incidents have undoubtedly cast a shadow on the racetrack's summer season, which began on July 21, 2023.

In response to such horse racing safety concerns, the industry has taken measures to implement new regulations and safety protocols designed to protect equine athletes. For example, a new regulatory agency, the Horse Racing & Safety Authority, has been established to oversee stricter safety measures at racetrack venues, including Del Mar. But the recent accidents show that there's still room for improvement.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club spokesperson, Mac McBride, explained that the racetrack has various safety measures in place, including extra veterinary oversight, stringent medication rules, investments in racing surfaces, and a care program for retired horses as per ABC 10News. Del Mar Racetrack prides itself on being one of the safest major racing venues in North America, so ensuring the safety of horses and riders remains a top priority throughout the summer season and beyond.

As the Taste of New Orleans Food & Music Festival approaches, organizers and attendees alike will likely be more focused on the fun and entertainment that is sure to be abound, but perhaps this time, they may also be mindful of the recent incidents at Del Mar Racetrack. However, it's important to remember that the festival is an opportunity to celebrate New Orleans culture and indulge in Southern flavors and sounds, which is likely to bring both excitement and enjoyment to those who attend.

The festival is set to take place at the Seaside Tropical Cabana, which is located trackside at the top of the stretch run within the 1/8 pole and west of the tunnel entrance per the event's website. Ticket prices are $38, including five drinks tickets (5-ounce pours), and guests must be 21 years of age or older to attend. In addition to providing a fun and engaging experience for attendees, event organizers note that a portion of each ticket benefits the Louisiana State University Alumni of San Diego.

With the Taste of New Orleans Food & Music Festival just around the corner, it's an opportunity for Del Mar Racetrack to showcase the best of New Orleans culture.
