
On an otherwise typical morning of September 14, 2023, Booker T. Washington School in Urbana experienced disquieting events, according to WAND-TV. A shooting incident unfolded near the school, in full view of the school community, perpetrated by a group of four individuals against another duo.
In the aftermath of the dramatic incident, comprehensive police sweeps led, to multiple arrests. Shockingly, as Fox Illinois reports, an 11-year-old was found in possession of two stolen Glock handguns, a pistol magazine, and hundreds of rounds ammunition. Instructions discovered directed the child to flee carrying these lethal contents in a bookbag.
Urbana Police Chief Larry D. Boone highlighted the concern over the source of these benefitted firearms, a pressing issue both locally and beyond, as noted by WAND-TV.
Tackling this epidemic requires, the joint commitment of not just law enforcement. but the entire community. Only by addressing the root causes and the resulting impacts of firearm proliferation can we hope to protect our most vulnerable - our children.
