A peculiar drug smuggling incident at the Otay Mesa cargo facility in California was brought to light as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered nearly 200 pounds of liquid methamphetamine hidden within a tractor's fuel tank.
The incident unfolded on August 7th, when a 25-year-old male driver, operating a tractor trailer, sought to make an entry at the Otay Mesa cargo facility. CBP officers, however, quickly became suspicious and referred the driver, tractor, and trailer for a more detailed examination, according to Customs & Border Protection. During the subsequent hands-on inspection, CBP officers discovered a liquid substance in the tractor's fuel tank crystallizing, which was later confirmed to be liquid methamphetamine.
Rosa Hernandez, Port Director for the Otay Mesa port of entry, commented on the seizure, stating, "This unusual concealment method shows that drug traffickers will try anything to get their product across our borders." She also expressed her pride in the diligent efforts of the CBP officers who work tirelessly to protect the nation's borders.
As a consequence of the seizure, the CBP officers confiscated not only the narcotics but also the tractor and trailer. The unnamed driver has since been turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations. The street value of this particular drug shipment is estimated at an astonishing $221,500. The entire stock was removed from the tractor tank and placed into six five-gallon buckets, weighing a total of 195.33 pounds.
The seizure of the 200 pounds of liquid methamphetamine from the tractor's fuel tank accentuates the complexity of the drug trafficking issue and highlights the unyielding diligence of CBP officers.
