The quiet town of Laconia, N.H. has been disturbed again by the sinister appearance of antisemitic graffiti, this time targeting a specific member of the city's Jewish community. According to The Boston Globe, local, state, and federal authorities have launched an investigation into the series of hate crimes that have plagued Laconia's streets in recent times.
As reported by NHPR, Ira Keltz, president of Temple B'nai Israel, along with Rabbi Jan Katz, waves the flag of unity and compassion within the town, stating, "our diversity is our strength, and we will not allow the actions of a few to define our town." In the face of adversity, the Jewish community refuses to bow to fear, standing resolute against hatred.
What sets this incident apart from the previous acts of vandalism is its pointed nature. WMUR reports that this time, the perpetrator named a specific member of the Jewish community. The Laconia police, alongside the Civil Rights Unit of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are all moving to address this act, with the same WMUR article reporting that law enforcement is determined to protect the targeted individual and find those responsible for this heinous act.
Laconia's leaders, including Mayor Andrew Hosmer, are vigorously condemning the act of hate. As the mayor stated in the NHPR article, "We have to be vigilant in protecting our freedoms, our fellow citizens, and defending our shared values in this community.
