Earlier today, the suburban landscape of Plainfield, Illinois was disrupted by an unusual highway incident. It all began when a semi-truck transporting gasoline lost control and crashed into a center median wall on the I-55 Stevenson Expressway, according to ABC7 Chicago. That truck subsequently collided with another semi, this time a refrigerated tanker truck carrying ham. A total of six vehicles were involved in this bizarre accident, which led to full closures on the southbound side of I-55 at Route 126 as reported by NBC Chicago.
Aside from creating a logistical nightmare for local traffic, the accident resulted in a level one hazmat fuel spill, releasing over 1,000 gallons of gasoline onto the highway (ABC7 Chicago). And though the consequences of that spill were undoubtedly severe, it was the spectacle of cured meats scattered among the debris that provoked some strange fascination. With ham littering the highway, one might wonder about the sheer improbability of such an accident, and the impact it may have had on the psyches of those who bore witness to it.
The Illinois State Police have commenced investigations into the incident.
