In the City of Boston, preparations are underway for the October 9th, 2023 celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day, replacing the previously observed Columbus Day. The shift to observing this day comes as a result of an October 6, 2021 Executive Order by Acting Mayor Kim Janey according to the City of Boston's website and reflects a growing movement to honor the history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas.

Boston is situated on the traditional territory of the Massachusett at Ponkapoag Tribe. The city is also home to at least 11,000 Indigenous people from the United States and Canada, representing the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and other nations per the City of Boston.

For the first time ever, in recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day, the Council has ordered the Property Management Department to raise the flag of the Massachusetts Tribe at Ponkapoag over City Hall Plaza on October 6th, as mentioned on the City of Boston's website
