As NBC Boston reports, the water main break turns the neighborhood streets into rushing rivers and flooding not only roads, but also homes and basements. The gushing waters progressed from Lorna Road to Lena Terrace, flowing on to West Selden Street.
As WHDH reports, the fire department had, in fact, encountered the water main break while fighting the house fire. Resident Tania Thompson's account paints a vivid picture, recounting how the incident precipitated a flood at around 2 p.m., which eventually claimed several surrounding houses, including her own garage and basement. Even the street in which a neighbor's car had been parked was fractured due to the uncontrollable water surge.
Meanwhile, another incident also occurred in the different part of the city. As reported previously, around noon that day, a burst water pipe caused significant flooding near Fenway Park, initially believed to be a water main break as well.
As Boston 25 News reported, crews worked diligently to repair the damage, with water shut off to around 40 homes in the meantime. The exact cause of the water main break remains unknown, though the Boston Water and Sewer Commission alludes to a problem with the fire hydrant.
