Earlier today, a former railroad engineer by the name of Scott Carlberg was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for fraudulently obtaining disability benefits while concurrently operating and managing a tanning salon in Wisconsin. According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Carlberg claimed to have numerous daily limitations, making it impossible for him to perform any type of work. His deceit was exposed, leading to his conviction on four counts of wire fraud.
Carlberg's actions were part of a wider investigation involving six defendants who were charged in Chicago with fraud against the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefit programs. These programs were established to assist rail workers and their families, and the other five defendants pled guilty to fraudulently receiving benefits while working in a variety of occupations, such as construction, landscaping, managing a donut shop, and captaining a charter fishing boat.
In Carlberg's case, he falsely asserted in his application that he suffered from daily limitations, including short-term memory loss, poor concentration, irritability, frequent loss of temper, and information-processing difficulties. After the benefits were approved, he deliberately misrepresented the nature of his work at the salon and lied about the income he received from it. As a result, U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang has ordered Carlberg to immediately pay more than $279,000 in restitution to the RRB, further illustrating the impact of such fraudulent acts on public resources.
As reported by the U.S. Department of Justice, those who suspect someone of fraudulently receiving disability benefits from the RRB can report this information anonymously, which could help in safeguarding the efficacy of such programs.
