Two Chicago police officers, Christopher Liakopoulos, 44, and Ruben Reynoso, 43, are undergoing trial for their involvement in a July 2022 daylight shooting in Pilsen that injured Miguel Medina, 24. The officers face two counts each of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. The Chicago Tribune reports the officers maintain their use of force was reasonable.
The disputed events transpired at 7 a.m. on July 22, 2022, in the 1000 block of West 18th Street. Medina claims he was unarmed and posed no threat while defense attorneys argue the contrary. They state the officers perceived a deadly threat and responded appropriately. However, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, in a 2022 news conference, termed the shooting unlawful, unprovoked, and unjustifiable.
Foxx's office has experienced challenges when seeking convictions in similar cases involving police officers, as stated in the same Chicago Tribune article. In an AP News report, she stated that both officers had been "charged with having fired their shots", injuring an unarmed individual.
These cases hold the legal system accountable. As stated by Brian Sexton, Reynoso's attorney, officers should be judged on whether their actions were "objectively reasonable". This forces the public to question the integrity of the legal system, particularly in cases of excessive force.
