Earlier this week, a community united to honor Officer Aréanah Preston by renaming a street in Chicago's Avalon Park neighborhood, the same area where she was tragically murdered on May 6th, ABC 7 Chicago reported. This tangible and symbolic homage to Officer Preston's memory, now known as Officer Aréanah M. Preston Way, stands at the intersection of South Blackstone Avenue and East 82nd Street.
On that day, Officer Preston was off-duty but still in her uniform when she was shot and killed in front of her home. As family, friends, and fellow officers gathered to celebrate her life, Dionne Mhoon, Preston's mother, delivered a powerful message: "We as a community have to show our youth there are better ways than jumping on cars and causing havoc, or pointing guns at any human beings even police officers," she said, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
Aréanah Preston's ambitions stretched beyond her career in law enforcement. Shortly before her death, she completed requirements for a master's degree in jurisprudence at Loyola University of Chicago, with aspirations to one day join the FBI. Today, her name is etched into the Gold Star Memorial Wall, alongside countless other fallen officers, but her influence will be felt in other ways. her light will continue to shine on, said ABC 7 Chicago.
Determined to create a lasting legacy for their daughter, Preston's family is accepting donations to open a community center in her honor, turning every tear shed in sorrow into a foundation for hope. As Dionne Mhoon so poignantly declared, "There has to be greatness that comes out of this, and I'm here to work."
For Aréanah Preston, her memory will endure not just in a street sign or the hearts of those who knew her, but in the spirit of perseverance that will emanate from every corner of Chicago. As her mother's words still echo, "I promise your name will be the change you wanted to see."
