Costco, the nation's third-largest retailer, may be preparing for a hike in membership fees for its loyal customers in San Diego County and beyond, according to recent statements made by the company's Chief Financial Officer, Richard Galanti. While the exact timeline for such an increase remains uncertain, Galanti reassured listeners during a quarterly earnings call that any changes would be announced in due time, stating, "It's a question of when, not if", Patch reports. He emphasized that the company would assess the situation carefully before making any definitive choices and would keep the public informed throughout the process.

Historically, Costco has raised membership fees approximately every five years, with the most recent increase occurring in June 2017, when the basic membership cost shifted from $55 to $60 and the executive membership rose from $110 to $120, as per Scripps News.  As of the company's fourth quarter of 2023, Costco had 127.9 million members and operated 861 warehouses, including 591 in the United States. In San Diego County alone, there are locations in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, La Mesa, Poway, San Diego, San Marcos, Santee, and Vista.

Galanti noted that membership price increases usually occur more frequently than every six years, acknowledging that the current interval since the 2017 hike has been longer than usual. Costco reported a membership revenue of $4.58 billion for the fiscal year spanning September 2022 through August 2023, a figure that had grown from $4.22 billion the previous year. The company attributes this increase to the 71 million households that maintain memberships, 45% of which hold executive memberships, while simultaneously accounting for 73% of the retailer's sales, according to Scripps News.

As for the value members receive, Galanti expressed confidence in Costco's efforts to continuously improve on this front, explaining, "In terms of looking at the values that we provide our members, we continue to increase those at certainly a greater amount than even more than if and when an increase occurs." With the possibility of membership fee increases looming, the company seems keen on continuing to provide exceptional value to its customers regardless of any future changes.

Additionally, Costco has been implementing new measures to crack down on non-members taking advantage of their shopping facilities, including increased surveillance of their self-checkout lanes. While Galanti admitted that inventory shrinkage has risen in recent years, partly due to the introduction of self-checkout, he also highlighted that any shrinkage increases have been minimal when compared to the rates reported by other retailers. Thus, while the future may be uncertain regarding membership fees, Costco appears to be focused on maintaining the loyalty and satisfaction of its devoted customer base.
