In a series of incidents near Imperial Beach, California, San Diego Chief Patrol Agent McGurk-Daniel addressed the ongoing maritime challenges faced by the Border Patrol. The dangerous risks involved in trusting human smugglers and attempting ocean crossings to gain entry into the United States were underscored by these events, per a CBP report.

Early morning Monday, three individuals were observed running across the beach at Border Field State Park. Despite the efforts of the Border Patrol, the subjects evaded apprehension by returning to Mexico. Later that night, two more individuals, including a suspected smuggler, were apprehended.

In another alarming incident on Tuesday, approximately 20 swimmers were detected west of the state park beach by Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement partners. The group, including at least three young children, chose to return to Mexico when confronted. The dangers of these crossings were further illustrated later that night when six swimmers were observed crossing the Tijuana River north into a tributary. All six migrants were arrested by San Diego agents in the Seacoast Drive vicinity.

Chief Patrol Agent McGurk-Daniel emphasized the danger of these oceanic routes, saying, "Attempting to cross the border through treacherous waters is a life-threatening choice. We urge individuals to avoid these perilous journeys and to enter the United States through a designated port of entry." In light of these recent events, the relentless efforts of smugglers to exploit the desperation of vulnerable people become all the more apparent.

In another incident that same night at approximately 2:15 AM, a high-speed personal watercraft (PWC) was spotted near the state park beach, dropping off two individuals who later evaded authorities. The PWC promptly returned to Mexico. Early that morning, another PWC crossed the international border with two passengers on board, dropping off one individual near Imperial Beach Pier before returning to its origin. Agents successfully arrested the subject. It's worth noting that these PWC incidents occurred just days after a prior smuggle attempt, leading to the arrest of a convicted rapist in the vicinity of Imperial Beach.
