West Nile Virus, a mosquito-transmitted disease, has claimed two lives in DuPage County, sparking renewed concern for public health and safety. According to ABC 7 Chicago, the victims, who were in their 60s and 70s respectively, became ill in late August and have tragically passed away.
The DuPage County Health Department has confirmed a total of six human West Nile Virus cases in 2023. These two losses mark the first reported deaths linked to the virus this year. CBS News Chicago mentioned that the first victim was an Addison resident in their 70s, while the second was a West Chicago resident in their 60s.
West Nile Virus primarily spreads through infected mosquitoes, causing symptoms that range from mild fever, headache, and body aches to more severe complications such as high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, and sometimes death. It poses a particular risk to those over the age of 60 and individuals with certain medical conditions, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago.
Some preventative measures include wearing protective clothing, applying bug spray, and removing any standing water around homes that might attract mosquitoes.
