Yesterday, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts announced the arrest of Miguel Hernandez, also known as Miguel Gomez-Lopez, a 29-year-old Dorchester resident charged with sexually exploiting a 14-year-old minor.
According to the charging documents, Hernandez had allegedly contacted the minor through WhatsApp in April 2023, arranging to meet her in person. The following month, he purportedly coerced the victim into a sexual relationship and both photos and videos, which were found on his devices, seem to only strengthen the allegations regarding Hernandez's involvement in the exploitation.
The potential consequences of such actions are severe, with the charge carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison. The sentence also includes up to five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
In this case, the collaboration between the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and a multitude of other agencies has proven invaluable in bringing Hernandez to face charges. Yet, while it may be tempting to solely focus on the wrongdoer at hand, we ought not forget the long road to rehabilitation confronting the victim. It is of the utmost importance to never simply stop with the arrest, but to also consider what can be done to ensure a brighter future for the victim and work diligently to prevent future incidents of such exploitation.
