On September 21, at the Oakport office, nineteen officers from ten police agencies across the county gathered to participate in a specialized and interactive training event, geared towards honing their skills as domestic violence law enforcement experts.

This four-hour comprehensive training session empowers detectives, sergeants, and advanced officers with the necessary expertise to offer truly effective testimonies in court is the objective of this endeavor. Alameda County, at present, can only rely on a single Domestic Violence Law Enforcement Expert to provide testimony in trials per Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

As the region's District Attorney's office handles the review and prosecution of nearly 40,000 incident reports from twenty-two arresting agencies, the need for a larger pool of trained law enforcement officers is both evident and critical. In this vein, the recent training event stands as an opportunity for law enforcement personnel from all corners of the county to receive invaluable, specialized training from two esteemed statewide and national domestic violence experts, as noted by Evanthia Pappas, Senior Assistant District Attorney and head of the Domestic Violence Unit.

Pappas, the leading force behind the event, has crafted an agenda that includes mock direct and cross-examinations of law enforcement officers, ensuring that every participant receives a comprehensive learning experience. This timely and crucial professional training opportunity offers essential support for victims of domestic violence, particularly in light of recent horrific incidents across the county, as District Attorney Pamela Price stated.

Price, herself a survivor of domestic violence, noted the intricacies and complexities involved in domestic violence cases. Prosecutors often require the insights and expertise of domestic violence experts to dispel misconceptions and myths that jurors may hold about victims' behavior. In this sense, having a cadre of specially trained law enforcement experts in place will not only enable the District Attorney's office to prosecute such cases more effectively, but also provide invaluable support for domestic violence victims.
