The early hours of September 9, placed the life of a 16-year-old Hispanic male in Carlsbad, California, on a precarious precipice as an officer-involved shooting left the teenager injured but ultimately surviving the encounter. According to a San Diego PD Press Release, Carlsbad Police stumbled upon a white truck parked in a dirt lot near Carlsbad Boulevard and Palomar Airport Road just before 1 a.m. with five individuals inside, including the injured teen. The discovery of alcoholic beverages in the vehicle prompted officers to direct the occupants out of the truck.

The teenager in question, seated in the front passenger seat, exited the vehicle prematurely and began reaching under the seat, instigating vocalized commands from the officers to halt his actions. The situation rapidly escalated as the teen pulled what appeared to be a firearm from under the seat and turned towards the officers, compelling one of them to discharge his service weapon in reaction.

Struck in the right arm, the teen managed to flee towards the ocean, ultimately tumbling or leaping from the side of a cliff and landing on the coastline, where the officers were able to apprehend him. Quick to apply a tourniquet and provide essential treatment, the officers ensured the teenager's survival until he was transported to a local hospital for further medical care. Once stabilized, the young man was booked into Juvenile Hall on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm – the latter charge proving particularly relevant due to a startling discovery at the scene, as, another San Diego PD Press Release mentioned.

Upon investigation, the firearm in question turned out to be a Polymer 80-type weapon, also commonly referred to as a "ghost gun." These weapons are known for their unregulated nature, as they lack serial numbers and can often be assembled from DIY kits, rendering them nearly undetectable and extremely difficult to trace.

With an officer-involved shooting comes the responsibility to determine if the officer's actions were justified. In this case, Officer Marcos Bocanegra, who had been employed by the Carlsbad Police Department since May, was the one who discharged his weapon. As reported by the same Hoodline article, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit's findings will undergo examination by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to ascertain whether any criminal liability should fall on the officer. Additionally, the Carlsbad Police will conduct an administrative investigation involving the officer's discharge of his weapon.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the United States Attorney's Office will be monitoring the ongoing investigation, ensuring a level of transparency and accountability.
