Yesterday afternoon, September 4th, a fateful and harrowing tragedy unfolded in Westford, Massachusetts. An 18-year-old ventured into the forbidden waters of Merrill's Quarry and drowned.
According to NBC Boston, the teen was attempting to swim across the quarry when he began struggling and disappeared beneath the murky waters, leaving a friend to summon emergency assistance. The call was made at approximately 4:16 p.m., and a somber rescue mission commenced.
Firefighters from Westford, Tyngsboro, and Lowell, as well as the State Police Air Wing, offered their unwavering support. However, the sun set on any hope of a rescue when the Lowell Fire dive team eventually found the teen's lifeless body submerged in 40 feet of water around 5:24 p.m., as reported by CBS Boston.
Despite numerous signs and persistent warnings from authorities, officials admit that the warnings often fall on deaf ears. An NBC Boston report quotes Westford Deputy Chief Mike Denehy stating, "It's private property. It's dangerous. Visibility is maybe four feet deep, you don't know what's down there when you jump in." Deemed off limits to the public, the quarry's notoriety has only grown following its appearance in the 2013 film "Grown Ups 2".
Earlier this year, as stated by CBS Boston, emergency crews rushed to the same quarry, where fortunately, a rescue was possible. Deputy Chief Denehy recalled, "We were just here last week for an individual who jumped in. Fortunately, he was able to be rescued and is recovering."
