As the devastating flames spread, firefighters from the Templeton Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene as reported by Boston 25 News. Their efforts, while commendable, were sadly not enough to save the structure, which has now been deemed a total loss according to WHDH. Templeton Fire Chief David Dickie reflected on the significance of the Otter River Pub and Red Onion Pool Hall, stating, “The building is a historic building to the town of Templeton, it has been a bar for many, many years here in the town, it’s been here for over 100 years" as stated in Boston 25 News report. The site first opened as a general store – a meeting place for those traveling by horse or train – and over time housed various businesses, such as a post office, library, and furniture store. In the 1960s, it took on the form of a pub, the one that Templeton residents had come to know and love.
Investigations by fire officials found that the balloon construction of the building may have been responsible for spreading the flames, hastening the destruction of the property according to NBC Boston.
