Two JetBlue flights, numbered 494 and 972, faced a harrowing situation today as they were targeted by a green laser while approaching Boston's Logan Airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the incident occurred near Boston, at around 5:40 a.m., and thankfully, no injuries were reported in either case, according to NBC Boston.
This dangerous act not only puts the lives of those onboard at risk, but also poses significant threat to the safety of those on the ground. Despite nearly 9,500 laser strikes being reported to the FAA in 2022, this disturbing trend persists, as per Boston 25 News. Since 2010, a total of 278 pilots have suffered injuries as a result of these laser strikes, illustrating the severity of such reckless acts.
In efforts to discourage the malicious use of lasers, the FAA has implemented strict measures. Violators face fines of up to $11,000 per incident, and $30,800 for multiple incidents, according to WHDH. Additionally, the FAA requested laser manufacturers to include warning labels on their packaging, informing consumers of the potential safety hazards and legal ramifications related to improper use, furthers Boston 25 News.
As for the flights affected in this recent incident, JetBlue Flight 494 originated from Denver, Colorado, while Flight 972 was arriving from San Jose, California, as reported by NBC Boston. This serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that result from a single person's irresponsible actions, endangering countless lives both in the air and on the ground.
The FAA, in close collaboration with local authorities, has swiftly initiated an investigation into the matter, earnestly attempting to apprehend the individual or group responsible for such malicious acts, according to WHDH.
