Yesterday, a well-executed joint operation involving the Springfield Police Department, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, and Hampden County Sheriff's Department led to the arrest of a suspect, Edgardo DeJesus-Vazquez, in connection to the murder of Emmanuel Hernandez-Garcia back in August.

According to Springfield Police Department's official statement, on August 6, officers traveled to the intersection of Hancock Street and Union Street in response to a report of a gunshot victim. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Hernandez-Garcia gravely injured and immediately transported him to Baystate Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Springfield Police Homicide Unit, led by Captain Trent Duda, quickly set to work investigating the circumstances surrounding this event.

As the investigation progressed, detectives discovered that Hernandez-Garcia was involved in a physical altercation when he was shot. Their diligent work in collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses led them to identify DeJesus-Vazquez as the alleged shooter. Applying their knowledge of-the-case, the detectives acquired an arrest warrant for DeJesus-Vazquez earlier this week, and teamed up with Massachusetts State Police VFAS and Hampden County Sheriff's Department to track down the suspect. DeJesus-Vazquez, 25 years old, was found in an apartment building on the 100 block of Pine Street and taken into custody without incident.

DeJesus-Vazquez now faces a litany of charges, including murder, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court, with the date yet to be announced. In the meantime, the Springfield Police Homicide Unit's investigation, in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit, is ongoing as they work to establish a motive and ensure that any additional evidence is collected.
