In the chilling shadows of the U.S.-Mexico border fence in Otay Mesa, a heinous crime unfolded on July 28. The tragedy that occurred left one man dead and another injured, sparking an ever-growing search for the perpetrators believed to be tied to this homicide. Today, authorities continue to call for public assistance to bring justice to those affected by this crime.

The San Diego Sheriff's Homicide Unit and the San Diego County Crime Stoppers are actively collaborating in hopes of catching the suspects responsible. The ordeal began when CAL FIRE San Diego firefighters discovered a man who had been shot near the base of the border fence, approximately three miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

The surviving victim of this crime managed to find help after a harrowing experience. He was injured and lost after escaping with his life, walking along the border fence, and eventually seeking aid from the CAL FIRE San Diego firefighters. After being found, he was transported to a hospital for treatment while recounting the tragic story of how he and his friend came under fire.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the two victims had crossed into the United States through a gap in the border fence earlier in the night when they encountered a group of four Hispanic men, believed to be associated with the Hotel Libertad in Tijuana. The suspects engaged the victims in a conversation, asking who they had paid to cross the border. Upon learning that the victims had not paid for passage, they were forced up a mountain, ordered to their knees, and eventually shot by the assailants.

The surviving victim attempted to check on his friend after the suspects left, only to find him deceased. The survivor has added purpose to the collective efforts of local authorities and the public in finding those responsible for this crime. As of now, composite sketches of three out of the four suspected assailants have been released, described as Hispanic men with varying physical characteristics, ages, and builds.
