In a staggering turn of events, Illinois State Police troopers have made a record-breaking confiscation of over 5,000 pounds of cannabis during a traffic stop this past Wednesday, marking one of the largest seizures in the agency's history according to NBC Chicago. This serves as a reminder of the continuing battle against drug trafficking in the United States.
Roberto Mazo, 29, and Pedro Arreola, 33, both hailing from Lancaster, California, were apprehended at the scene for cannabis trafficking, unlawful possession of cannabis of more than 5,000 grams with intent to deliver, and unlawful possession of cannabis more than 5,000 grams. Following a hearing on Thursday, they were released on pre-trial conditions, with additional charges pending as the investigation continues as reported by WISN.
It all unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday when a state police trooper conducted a traffic stop on the suspects' vehicle, a 2000 Provost Bus, along Interstate 80 in Henry County. During the traffic stop, police reportedly observed "numerous indicators" of criminal activity, prompting an ISP K-9 to the scene. The K-9 was quick to alert to the odor of narcotics, instigating troopers to thoroughly search the bus.
Upon inspection, law enforcement found a staggering 5,231 pounds of illegal cannabis, which was estimated to have a street value of between $6.3 and $14.7 million—an enormous seizure for the state. This type of confiscation inevitably sheds light on the pervasiveness of drug trafficking in the country, often conducted through its vast network of highways.
